Looking for Federal Work Experience? Get an Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships with the Federal Government provide an individual the opportunity to learn and obtain qualifications in a specified trade or craft. Apprenticeships partner students with mentors and role models to support current and future professional growth and development. These opportunities vary in length from agency to agency and often take place during the summer following the school year. Requirements for eligibility and selection criteria depend on the individual program.

1. Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP)

The Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP) provides an opportunity for students to participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer.

The goals of SEAP are to encourage participating students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further their education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and their participation in research, and to make them aware of DoN Research and technology efforts, which can lead to employment within the DoN.

2. Research and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (REAP)

Established in 1979 with grants from the research offices of the U.S. Army, REAP is administered by the Academy of Applied Science and sponsors about 120 students at 52 colleges and universities nationwide each year. This program encourages economically and socially disadvantaged high school students to pursue careers in math, science, and technology through hands-on experience in research and development.

REAP apprentices participate in summer cooperative work-study and research programs under the design and supervision of university mentors.

Interested students do not apply directly to REAP but must be screened and recommended by high school teachers. Click here for more information on REAP.

3. U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Student Educational Employment Program Managers

This program is a partnership between the Prince George’s County Maryland Public School System and USDA which moves the classroom into the Department to facilitate the training of students to fill clerical and administrative support positions. USDA is partnered with High Point High School.
